Compress a PDF so it's small enough to email

Compress PDF reduces file size by recompressing the photos and scanned images inside the file. The file is processed right on your device and never uploaded anywhere.

Steps

  1. Choose a PDF fileOpen Compress PDF and press “Choose files” or drag and drop files into the box. You can choose several files at once, up to 100 MB each.
  2. Choose a compression level“Medium” keeps images sharp enough to print on A4. “Strong” gives the smallest file, good for email or on-screen viewing.
  3. Press “Compress PDF”With several files, the button shows the number, e.g. “Compress 3 files”. A progress bar appears; press “Cancel” if you want to stop.
  4. Download the resultPress “Download”. A single file is named “<file name> - compressed.pdf”; several files are bundled into one .zip file. You can “Preview” or “Keep editing” before downloading.

Tips

  • Scanned files and phone photos compress the most.
  • For email choose “Strong”; for printing choose “Medium”.
  • Password-protected files: the tool asks for the password to open them before compressing.

Good to know

  • Text-only files, such as those exported from Word, usually can't get smaller. In that case the screen says “Couldn't compress any further” and you should keep the original.
  • PNG and black-and-white images are kept as is so text doesn't blur.
  • Each run accepts up to 100 files, 500 pages and 300 MB in total.
